WIGMEN SIGNS SPONSORSHIP DEAL WITH PARNELL ASSURANCE

The Kroton Hela Wigmen Rugby League club has announced and welcomes the sponsorship support of Parnell Assurance PNG Limited for the 2026 PNG National Rugby League season.

Wigmen management and its board shared their appreciation to Parnell Assurance PNG Limited and its Chairman, Mr. Teddy Tasion, for this timely and impactful partnership.

This sponsorship will provide medical insurance coverage for over 50 members of the club, including players and officials, marking a significant milestone in strengthening player welfare and advancing the club’s professional standards.

In a press statement, the club said rugby league is a highly demanding and physical contact sport, where the risk of injury is ever-present. The burden of medical expenses can be significant for players, officials, and their families.

The sponsorship will provide much-needed security, peace of mind, and assurance that team is protected both on and off the field.

The club believes this initiative places the Kroton Hela Wigmen among the first PNGNRLC teams to be covered under a privately arranged comprehensive medical insurance scheme.

The management concluded that the partnership demonstrates a shared commitment to the health, safety, and wellbeing of its athletes and officials. It further strengthens their resolve to represent Hela Province with pride, discipline, and excellence throughout the 2026 season.

PNG’s only Nephrologist needs urgent support

Papua New Guinea’s only nephrologist, Dr. Steven Bogosia, is now fighting for his life, as the very community he has served for years rallies to save him.
A fundraising dinner held last week Saturday at the Dynasty Restaurant raised K205,500 in just three weeks, part of the K500,000 needed for his urgent cancer treatment overseas.
The fundraiser was planned and executed within a short period by a united team of doctors and staff from Paradise Private Hospital and Port Moresby General Hospital.
Dr. Bogosia, the country’s first and only kidney specialist, has been at the forefront of kidney care in PNG.
Through years of training overseas and service at home, he helped establish dialysis services and led the country to its first successful kidney transplant in 2025, giving hope to patients once told their condition was the “end of the road.”
Now, he faces a cancerous mass in his jaw, with doctors confirming that the treatment he needs is not available locally.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Bogosia reflected on his mission to build a better healthcare system. “We can save lives here, in our own country,” he said, calling for continued support to strengthen kidney services in PNG.
Chair of the organising committee, JANET SIOS, OL, called on all Papua New Guineans to stand together.
“We must all stand with our doctor and save him, so he can continue his special work of saving lives in this country,” she said.
Colleagues including Dr. Wesong Boko, Dr. Aina Annota, and Dr. Hoxson Okti Poki praised his dedication, while patient Judith Lapila Pauls shared an emotional testimony through her daughter, describing how Dr. Bogosia gave her hope and a second chance at life.
Major support came from corporate and government organisations including NCDC under Governor Powes Parkop, Parnell Assurance, Southern Cross, CPL, Borneo Pharma, NDOH, National Planning, Kumul Petroleum Holdings, Pacific International Hospital, and the Parliament Clerk’s Office, among others.
In-kind sponsors such as Brian Bell, Marsh Ltd, SP Brewery, House of Gemini, and Frangipani Printing Solutions also contributed to the success of the event.
Organisers confirmed that support is still flowing in, with more fundraising activities planned in the coming months.
For many, the message is clear: saving Dr. Bogosia means saving countless lives in the future.

Firm donates vehicle to police headquarters

PARNELL Assurance PNG donated a Suzuki Jimny vehicle to the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) to enhance the delivery of insurance services to police members.

The presentation took place last Sunday at the national police headquarters in Konedobu, Port Moresby.

The new vehicle was specifically designated for the insurance section of the RPNGC’s human resource management directorate.

It was intended to assist the team in managing logistical tasks and providing more effective support to constabulary members.

Acting assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for human resource, Gaiwary Tinga, explained that the vehicle would be vital for assisting members travelling from outside centres for medical care.

“There were times when our members arrived at odd hours and need transport between the airport, hospital, or accommodation.

“Having a dedicated vehicle would greatly improve our ability to provide timely assistance,” ACP Tinga said.

He further noted that mobility was essential for efficient service delivery, particularly when considering PNG’s weather, road conditions and law and order challenges.

Parnell Assurance has served as the constabulary’s health insurer for the past three years.

Under the current arrangement, the company covers 80 per cent of medical costs, while members contribute the remaining 20 per cent.

Parnell Assurance executive officer Johnson Rajan said during the handover that the donation was intended to ease the specific logistical challenges faced by the insurance team.

In response, Tinga acknowledged the ongoing relationship between the two organisations.

“Parnell Assurance has been a strong partner over the past three years, and we thank them for understanding our needs and continuing to support the constabulary,” he said.

Insurance to benefit police force

AN insurance policy signed between the Royal Papua New Guinea Constabulary (RPNGC) and Parnell Assurance PNG will enable easier access to benefits for police personnel.
Police commissioner David Manning said the new insurance arrangement overcame difficulties experienced in past coverage which had required the upfront payment of medical bills in full before beneficiaries could seek an 80 to 90 per cent reimbursement.
“Previous insurance policies had been unfair for personnel in that treatment was being delayed, but rapid access to healthcare is something for which delays are not acceptable,” he said.
“With the new policy, all members of the Constabulary will be issued with cards which they will present at affiliated medical institutions for treatment without needed to pay anything upfront.
“Now our more than 6,000 police personnel have clear information on the health benefits to which they are entitled and have easier and faster access to these benefits.”
Manning said the new agreement provided access to medical services and life insurance, with the policy being in force from now until July 2026, at which time it would be reviewed.
“This health insurance card concept will be the first of its kind for police personnel to access health insurance at the designated hospitals and clinics across the country.
“We have also commenced talks to include mental health services as part of insurance coverage, this is important considering the gruesome tasks to which police often have to attend.
“A healthy police force is an effective police force with higher dedication, but a lack of attention to healthcare by successive governments has been a factor that undermined morale.
“That was not good enough when we have our men and women in uniform going out each day and putting their safety on the line for the protection of our people. A career in the force must add value to the lives of personnel and their legal dependants.”
Manning made the point that the policy comes as a result of the Government’s escalated support to the police force, particularly at a time when the RPNGC was seeking to retain the most effective police men and women, and recruit thousands more into the force.
“The police force is competing with other employers to attract suitable candidates, and we have taken deliberate steps to ensure we offer the right environment for quality police officers.
“As commissioner, I have directed policy and administrative reforms aimed to address the welfare issues and modernisation the police force,” he said.
“working with Government, we can address many critical issues affecting the constabulary.
